Parent Volunteer Program (PVP)

Parents: Partners in Education

Parent volunteers do a lot of the heavy lifting at the school and help in meaningful ways. As parent volunteers, we model for our children the behavior of freely giving our time and the importance of giving the gift of service to a community we believe in. One of our goals is to find something for each parent to do. Schedules are demanding and present a moving target. Talents and interests are widely varied. Matching the gifts of the families with the needs of the students, teachers, and school will be complicated. Another challenge is to see that no one family is asked to do too much.

We are proud of the many opportunities available for parents to be actively involved in our school community. The administration, teachers and staff, Board of Trustees, parents and students strongly support parental involvement in all facets of school life. Plus, it is a great way to get to know our community!

PVP volunteer options include:

  • Annual Auction & Gala

The Annual Fundraiser & Gala event is an excellent way to get out for a lovely evening and get to know other parents in the community. There are so many ways to help, from gathering donations for the auction to planning the event. Subcommittees include online auction, live auction, donations, marketing, food/beverage, entertainment, and raffle. This committee is a sure way to find new friends among other JMS parents.

  • Carpool Door Greeters

This team has one of the most important and fulfilling roles in our community. They greet children every day! Door greeting begins the Tuesday after Labor Day and finishes on the last day of school. Team members facilitate the 15-minute carpool every morning. A great way to get to know our entire community.

  • Community Events Team

The Community Events Team’s primary role is to facilitate community building between parents, faculty and staff at JMS by providing opportunities for the entire community to gather and take part in. In addition, the following subcommittee work is also included:

    • Work Party Team (comprised of three to four people) is responsible for organizing work parties, usually on the last Friday of the month, at the Adolescent House. A work party has two functions. Parents gather once a month from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. to work on special projects for teachers, which may include cutting, laminating, sewing, and lettering. Also, you can enjoy some coffee and treats while meeting other parents in the Alcuin community.

    • The Teacher Appreciation Team is responsible for organizing activities during Teacher Appreciation Week for JMS teaching and administrative staff to express the community's appreciation for their hard work and dedication to our children.
  • Substitute Teaching

Parents are welcome to apply to be a substitute teacher throughout the year, stepping in to support a classroom when needed. Another great way to get to know the community. This volunteer opportunity requires an interview, background check, and on-site observation before beginning.

  • Going Outs Driver Team

The Going Outs Driver Team’s primary role is to drive elementary students to the local venues, such as the library, grocery store, etc. Students will call to coordinate and arrange a driver days in advance of their Going Out. This volunteer opportunity requires a background check and an MVR (Motor Vehicle Report).

  • Ad Hoc Team

There are times when we require parent volunteers, and don’t realize it until the need is upon us. This could include activities such as field trip chaperoning, taking yearbook photos, participating in all-school events, picture day, or working on various classroom projects. If you’d like to help out during those times, we’d love to have you on board.

  • Room Parent

Room Parents serve as another bridge between the school and the class families. Room parents’ main tasks are communicating with class families and planning out-of-school social events for the class families.

  • Board of Trustees

Trustees are a group of people, elected and voted in, who are responsible for overseeing and guiding the management and operations of JMS, particularly in non-profit, educational, or charitable contexts. They ensure the organization fulfills its mission, manages resources effectively, and acts in the best interests of its stakeholders.

  • Board Committee Work

Board Committee work involves the activities and responsibilities undertaken by the Board of Trustees, known as a committee, to address specific areas of the organization’s operations. These committees are formed to handle more focused tasks and provide in-depth analysis and recommendations to the full board of directors, enhancing governance and decision-making.
